Review habits for AI-assisted code

Code written with an assistant still needs a careful reviewer. A short checklist for reading generated code with the right amount of suspicion.

Updated

Needs review. Not reviewed or updated for over 6 months, so some details may be out of date.

  • 25 min to complete

Generated code looks confident. That is exactly why it needs a calm, methodical review.

Read it as if a stranger wrote it#

You would not merge a stranger's change without reading it. Same rule here. If you cannot explain a line, do not ship it.

Check the edges#

Assistants are good at the happy path. Look for empty inputs, errors, timeouts and permissions.

Run it, do not just read it#

Execute the code and the tests. Add a test for anything that looked risky.

Keep changes small#

Small diffs are easier to review and easier to revert. Ask for one change at a time.
